Abstract
The study assessed the degree of parental involvement in the education and total development of high school students in the University of Batangas as basis for proposing a parenting program. One hundred fifty (150) randomly selected students who were living with their parents (either father, mother or both) and their parents; 75 fathers and 75 mothers served as respondents. Majority of the parents were of the middle ages, married with three children, at least high school graduate, either employed, into business or housekeeping and average income earners. Parents were found to be capable of involving themselves in the education and total development of their adolescents. They were most often involved in developing their children’s personal health and hygiene, more often involved in developing socialization and discipline and least often in developing spirituality, self-esteem and emotional intelligence and study habits. The top-ranking problems reported by parents in their involvement in the total development of their children were revealed as: too much trust on their adolescents’ ability, belief that the school was being paid to do it all, being too busy with business, work and household chores, financial problems and the belief of coming in only when problems crop up for fears of being misunderstood. Parent-respondents and their children have common perception that parents were often but not always involved in their developmental activities. Furthermore, they do not differ significantly in their perception of the problems met in parental involvement. On the basis of the seemingly lesser time and problems met by the parents in the level of involvement in the total development of their adolescents, there is an emerging need for a parenting program geared towards parental involvement in the high school department of the University of Batangas.
