Abstract
The additional two years in Basic Education in the country mandated by the recently implemented K to 12 Program has been the subject of many debates in the last few years. Among the more pressing arguments in the discussions is the question of whether or not the grades 11 and 12 have been enough to prepare the Senior High School (SHS) graduates for college which remains to be unanswered. With the first batch of SHS graduates well on their way to finishing their first year in college, it cannot be any more timely to find out, if indeed, the K to 12 has served them well for tertiary level education. Specifically, the main objective of this study was to find out if the pioneer batch of SHS graduates was fully equipped for college in terms of their English communication skills. The College Readiness Standards (CRS) with corresponding English Language Standards (ELS) and Performance Standards (PS) was the basis of determining the extent of readiness of the freshman college students of the current school year. A questionnaire was the primary tool of the data gathering procedure complemented by interview. The typology of Higher Education Institution was also considered in this study to get a cross-section of the extent of readiness for college of the SHS graduates from a private university, a state university, and a local college. Using Slovin's formula, 120 students and four teachers from a local college, 314 students and eight teachers from a private university, and 320 students and ten students from a state university were selected to bethe respondents of this study. Weighted mean and correlational statistics were utilized to analyze the relationship of data from the participants. The findings revealed that the pioneer batch of SHS graduates are perceived to be prepared only to a moderate extent for college in all of the ELS and PS expected of them regardless of the type of HEI they come from.
