Abstract
Twenty-first century education is about giving students the skills they need to succeed in this new world, and helping them develop the confidence to practice those skills. With so much information readily available to them, 21st-century skills should focus more on making sense of that information sharing and using it in smart ways. The study determined the 21st-century learning skills adopted by Social Studies teachers among private schools in the Philippines. The descriptive research design was used in the study. A questionnaire was distributed among the selected private junior high school teachers. Mean and standard deviation were used in analyzing the data to find out the 21st-century skills adopted by the teachers. Spearman rank coefficient was also utilized to determine the relationship of adoption and integration of the 21st-century skills among Social Studies teachers. Findings revealed that the Social Studies teachers adopted almost all the 21st-century skills specifically critical thinking skills, communication skills, and career and learning self-reliance skills. Results showed that there was a significant relationship between the extent of adoption and integration among the participants. On the other hand, the dominant problems faced by the Social Studies teachers in terms of personal aspect was the many roles they play as a teacher while in terms of professional obstacle was the students’ negative perception towards the subject. By integrating teachers’ 21st-century skills, the researchers’ proposed methods and materials that could be used by the Social Studies teachers to teach effectively and respond to the needs of the 21st century learners.
