Abstract
Educators nowadays are facing different challenges concerning the English language skills competence of their students. English language skills competence will help every Filipino student to match with the global educational standards.This study aimed to assess the language skills competence of Grade 10 Junior High School students in a private university in Batangas City, to identify the difficulties encountered by the students in reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills, to identify the implications of the study's results in the improvement of language skills teaching and to determine the necessity of the use of each intervention program based on the result. The researchers employed the descriptive research design and stratified sampling method. They selected the 252 samples out of 420 population through simple random sampling to gather the necessary information needed for the present undertaking. The results of the study revealed that speaking was one of the greatest language difficulties experienced by the students Furthermore, the study disclosed that the students from the university saw the importance of developing their speaking skills in preparation for higher education The researchers recommended that teachers should be equipped with the advanced approaches and trends in teaching English language skills. Moreover, they should have a set of intervention guidelines as to how English language skills must be taught in the classroom setting.
