Abstract
One of the tools used by educators in selecting items for exams is the item analysis. Item analysis is a statistical technique that evaluates the effectiveness of test items. In developing quality assessment or in preparing multiple-choice test, item analysis plays an important role in ensuring the reliability of the test and in identifying content areas that maybe problematic for students. This research aimed to improve the quality of the test in order to effectively measure students’ performance of learning. It also intended to analyze the items of teacher-made test based on the level of difficulty and level of discrimination to determine if it matched the syllabus. The examination administered to students was the Midterm Examination in Advanced Networking. A major course, Advanced Networking introduces the concepts of advanced networking based on Allied Telesis protocol. It also prepares students to take the certification examination. Results showed that 30% of the total test items were problematic. The 30% items were from the topics, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Spanning Tree Protocol and Allied Hardware and VLANs. Such items needed revision or total replacement or should be given more focus. No problematic items were found in the topics, Internet Protocol and Switching. The result revealed that 70% of the total test items must be considered and retained as part of the midterm examination. Researchers proved that item analysis is a reliable tool used for selecting best items for examination.
