Abstract
This study focused on determining the learning competencies in basic science of the College of Arts and Sciences students which will serve as basis for improving science teaching. The results of the study shows that respondents are generally competent having learned the basic knowledge about their physical and biological environment, competent in their actions using scientific attitudes and thinking, competent in their communication and competent as well in their knowledge of the interrelationship of science, technology and society. Among the factors that affect the level of development of the different learning competencies of the students are their own study habits and attitudes, their teacher‟s techniques and methodologies and the school environment. The finding of the study suggest for a more comprehensive science curriculum to strengthen the teaching-learning process. As initial recommendation, teachers should continue to update themselves along the field and that the school as a whole should continue to upgrade its facilities and improve the classroom environment to enhance the teaching-learning process.
