Abstract
Strong mathematical competency is a key in developing pedagogical content knowledge. Thus, students need to be given opportunities to articulate their thinking about mathematics tasks and about mathematical concepts. This action research aims to propose measures for the improvement of mathematics teaching and learning competencies of CAS students. The focus of this study was to address the difficulties being experienced by the faculty in teaching and by the students in learning. Students‟ competency was measured through the result of midterm and final examination. The proposed measures to improve mathematical competencies focused on three areas: Faculty, teachers beliefs and views on how teaching and learning affect the way they teach; Instructional Design, concerned with the definition of models and theories that may be used as frameworks for developing modules or lessons that increase the possibility of learning and encourage the engagement of learners so that they learn faster and gain deeper levels of understanding; and Research, links teacher‟s knowledge, curriculum implementation and student learning are the focus of majority of action researches in universities like UB. The findings of the study suggest teachers to conduct research on recognizing the cognitive obstacles that make the learning of particular mathematical topics difficult for students and these may lead to valuable results that if applied well, will enhance math teachers teaching and improve math learners learning. As recommended, the proposed measures be implemented.
