Abstract
The patient’s safety is a priority for health services in all hospital settings. Error in medication is one of the leading causes of sentinel events in the health care industry. Hence, this study aimed to determine contributing factors in medication error among staff nurses and recognize the extent of potential risks to nurses themselves, patients, and healthcare institutions. A self- constructed survey questionnaire was administered to 99 randomly selected nurses from public and private healthcare institutions in Batangas Province. Descriptive statistics was used to observe the distribution of the data. Results revealed that a significant relationship existed between the demographic profile of the respondents and human error factors contributing to medication administration error. There was also a significant relationship between the contributing factors to medication administration error and their potential risk on nurses, patients, and healthcare institutions. Moreover, illegible hand writing and incomplete gathering of patient data information were the major significant human factors that contributed to the medication administration error. Thus, healthcare institutions should continuously provide training and seminars to the nurses on safe medication administration to promote awareness among them on the correct medical practice and avoidance of medication administration errors.
