Abstract
This research entitled “MINLIT AR App: A Tool to Motivate and Increase the Level of Engagement of Students in Media and Information Literacy” was accomplished to tackle in- depth the concept of augmented reality in the context of education. The purpose of the study was to create an augmented reality application and to assess its effectiveness as a tool to motivate and increase the level of engagement of students. It also aimed to determine the features of the created MINLIT AR app and evaluate it in terms of understandability, learnability, operability and attractiveness. Moreover, it tried to discover if there was a difference between the test results of the students in the controlled group or those who were taught a lesson without using MINLIT AR app and treatment or experimental group or those students who were taught a lesson using MINLIT AR app. This study employed the use of the developmental and experimental research design. The researchers utilized the use of online survey- questionnaires as the main data gathering instrument answered by forty (40) MINLIT students from University of Batangas Senior High School Department S.Y. 2021- 2022. and used statistical measures such as weighted mean, composite mean and T-test. The researchers concluded that MINLIT AR application has text, graphic and 3D model as its features; easy to understand, easy to learn, easy to operate and attractive to the user; thus, user-friendly. Moreso, MINLIT AR app is highly effective in motivating and increasing the level of engagement of Senior High School Students in the subject Media and Information Literacy; and there is significant difference between the test results of the students in the controlled group or those who were taught a lesson not using MINLIT AR application and the treatment or experimental group or those who were taught a lesson using MINLIT AR application. Thus, the application is an effective tool in teaching the subject Media and Information Literacy. In the end, though the result of the study indicates that MINLIT AR app is highly effective as a tool to motivate and increase the level of engagement of students, multimedia elements such as audio, video and animation should be added to its features to be fully used as a tool to motivate and increase the level of engagement of students.
