Abstract
This research paper assessed the public awareness in the Barangay Cuta, Batangas City on cyber-libel. The respondents were 374 residents of Barangay Cuta. A 25-item self-constructed questionnaire based on reviewed literature was used as a survey instrument. The data gathered was statistically analyzed and interpreted. Results show that in terms of the commission of cyber-libel, the respondents are aware that through the use of computers, cyber-libel arises when a person makes a false statement that can ruin one’s reputation. In terms of consequence of committing cyber-libel, they also have knowledge that imprisonment and/or fine awaits a person who will be found guilty of committing cyber-libel. The effect of advancement of technology is that virtual meeting platforms are taken advantage in conducting regular webinars which raises awareness on cyber-libel among citizens. Lastly, to enhance the community’s level of awareness based on community’s perception, it is recommended that there should be a social media platform that raises awareness on cyber-libel which must have a regular post or publication in relation to the same.
