Abstract
Initiatives in the preservation of Indigenous Knowledge are at an all-time high due to their contributions to science, agriculture, medicine, and other fields. These initiatives complement the desire of most countries to protect and maintain the cultural heritage and traditions of their Indigenous Peoples (IP). Modernization seems to have gotten the better of most IPs as some have already succumbed to the changes in the way of living brought about by the disruptive nature of technology. Mangyans are IP native to Mindoro, Philippines. The Mangyan Heritage Center (MHC), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), oversees the welfare of this group of people. They are also known to possess the most complete collection of artifacts, writings, and studies made about the Mangyan, and which are available thru a website created by an international volunteer. With the primordial goal of helping MHC continue the tradition of helping the Mangyans by utilizing technology to their benefit, the proponents aimed to (1) identify selected facets of the Mangyan indigenous knowledge and practices to be showcased on a new web portal; (2) modify the existing MHC website; and (3) design and develop a new website catering to the advocacies of the MHC. The study made use of the Developmental Research design, taking advantage of interview, focus group discussion, and survey methods to gather data on the requirements for web development and product testing. The web development life cycle was followed in the design and development of a well-structured portal, the usability of which was tested under ISO 9241-11 standards. The proponents came up with a new website that not only retained the strong features of the original and highlighted limited facets of the Mangyan culture in respect of indigenous culture, practices, and indigenous knowledge but is also able to prominently feature the advocacies of MHC while promoting awareness and appreciation of the colorful Mangyan culture.
