Abstract
This research evaluated Augmented Reality (AR) games as an alternative learning tool for the preservation and appreciation of local knowledge. The evaluation measured how the game application can help players gain knowledge on the cultural heritage of Taal, Batangas. In particular, the researchers characterized the current status of students’ awareness or appreciation of Batangueño local knowledge. Likewise, this study presented an anthology of Taal heritage included in the mobile AR game, THe Hunt (Taal Heritage Hunt). Lastly, this research evaluated the effectiveness of the AR game as an alternative learning tool to improve the preservation and appreciation of local knowledge. Two hundred seventeen (217) students were involved as subjects of the study. One group (112 students) attended the traditional lecture in Social Science 101 class while the other group (105 students) used the AR game to acquire the local knowledge of Taal, Batangas. In the AR game, the Batangueño local knowledge was presented through various media such as videos, audio, and images. When a gadget with the app views the so-called marker, learning materials pop-up. After the lecture or the game, the two groups took the same formative exam and the results were statistically analyzed. The analysis reflected that students who played the AR game got a significantly higher number of correct answers when compared with those who attended the lecture. This showed that based on the data, the AR game is an effective alternative tool for learning. The research recommended the development of AR games for similar topics in social sciences. Further, the study suggested using AR games as an alternative learning tool specifically to preserve and appreciate local knowledge.
