Abstract
This empirical investigation focuses on studying and describing the leadership styles of Deans of the Colleges of University of Batangas as basis for developing a leadership enhancement program. The descriptive method of research was employed in the study. A checklist type of questionnaire and a semi-structured interview guide was used in gathering data. Results of the study, show that the Deans of the Colleges of University of Batangas employ all three types of leadership styles namely authoritarian, democratic or participative, and laissez faire or delegative as warranted by the situations. As revealed in the study, the Deans of the Colleges of University of Batangas employ all the three styles of leadership, but one style was found to be dominant. Findings show that for the dean of the College of Engineering, the most dominant leadership style was the authoritarian style. For the College of Nursing and Midwifery the leadership style used by the dean is a combination of democratic and delegative. The dean of the College of Education employ the democratic style as also done by the deans of the College of Allied and Medical Science, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Accountancy, College of Information and Computer Technology. The dean for the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management employs a combination of an authoritarian style and democratic style. The most commonly employed leadership style by the Deans of the Colleges of University of Batangas is the democratic or participative style, which, based from literature and the performance of the University of Batangas itself was the most effective style for the school. However, employment of this leadership style cannot be one hundred percent reliable. There are colleges that face academic challenges as board examination, regional and national competitions Owing to this, it is recommended that the deans of colleges with performances in board examinations that barely exceed the national passing average as well-as those that never topped the interdepartmental academic competitions /sponsored by school organizations nationwide must use interventions to effectively lead their departments.
