Abstract
A novel bath soap product using new and natural ingredients with antimicrobial properties that will be acceptable to the consuming public in terms of cosmetic quality and efficacy was being developed. Dodecanoic acid (C12) produced from the natural fatty acids and glycerol to form alpha mononoglyceride of Glycerol Monolaurate (GML), Psidium guajava and Averrhoa bilimbi leaves extracts were used in this study. Many clinical studies on GML antimicrobial properties were published in international scientific journals. It has shown that GML is nontoxic and non-irritating and it works directly on gram positive or skin bacteria and on the envelope of the viruses by disrupting the lipid bilayer of the virus such as HIV and SARS viruses. GML as a surfactants has been classified by the US FDA as GRAS – Generally Regarded as Safe. Folklore medicine believes the antimicrobial properties of the Guava (Psidium guajava) and Camias Ginger Lily (Averrhoa bilimbi) leaf extracts. These two plants have been identified to posses both with medicinal, whitening, and antimicrobial properties. The antibacterial activity could be associated with the presence of bioactive compounds of the flavonoids type, like luteolin and apigenin. Studies are needed to isolate and identify the responsible compounds. Despite of these findings, it has never been attempted to incorporate these natural ingredients as substitute to Triclosan as antimicrobial agents in most of the commercially available bath soaps. The study made used of cold process in bath soap making.
