Abstract
The accessibility of sexual materials to young people of today has alarmed both the state and the church respectively. Both agreed that it is a contributory factor to the increase of teenage pregnancies, practise of pre-marital sex, and rise in the number of people affected by Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) /Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted disease. Likewise, both agreed that such leads to degeneration of people’s moral values. However, the church and the state differ in their approaches in finding solutions to the problem. The state, through the Department of Education integrated sex education termed as “ Adolescent Reproductive Health Program” as a subject in the school curriculum which the church strongly opposes who still insists on the practise of self-control, abstinence, and must be done only by married couples as solution to the problem because sex is sacred. The church reiterates that sex education is best left to the parents to teach the matter to their own children. The University of Batangas, being a non-sectarian institution wishes to determine the perceptions of students and faculty members on this government program and its applicability of integrating it in the curriculum. Four-hundred forty (440) respondents (students and faculty members) were randomly selected for this study. Quantitative statistics and qualitative description were used to determine if there is any significant difference in their perceptions on the inclusion of sex education in the curriculum. Chi-square test was used. The results indicated that according to the perceptions of the faculty and student respondents, sex education is to be included in the school curriculum and taught to freshmen for one whole semester but must be integrated in subjects like values education, social studies and the like.
