Abstract
Estimates of population parameters for Decapterus macrosoma (Bleeker, 1851) were derived from length-frequency samples from Batangas Bay. The estimates include von Bertalanffy growth parameters (L = 30.47 (TL, cm) and K = 0.55 yr-1), natural, fishing and total mortalities (M = 1.701 yr-1 , F = 2.43 yr-1 , Z = 3.23 yr-1 ), exploitation rates (Emax = 0.62, E0.1 = 0.60), gear selectivity, annual recruitment patterns, and yield isopleths based on the Beverton-and-Holt Relative Yield-per-Recruit model. The investigation was conducted from March 2009 to February 2010, and all data analyses from the monthly length-frequency samples taken were carried-out using FiSAT computer software. The Powell-Wetherall Plot and ELEFAN I routines estimated very similar values for L and Z/K. The new growth estimates were also comparable to previous estimates available on the same species from other locations. Recruitment was noted to be year-round and bimodal. Estimates of fishing mortality and exploitation rate were found to be presently above recommendable levels.
